About the MOVSM

Personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States are awarded the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal for their performance of outstanding volunteer community service of a continued, direct and significant nature after 31 December 1992.

 Eligibility is determined by:

(a) Service to the civilian and military family community
(b) The significance of the nature and results of the service
(c) The favorable reflection upon the Military Service and the Department of Defense
(d) The sustained and direct nature of the contribution.

There is no specified time threshold to qualify for the award, approval authorities shall ensure that the service to be honored merits the special recognition afforded by this medal. The MOVSM is intended to recognize extraordinary community support over a period of time and not a single act or achievement. Additionally, it is intended to honor direct support of community activities.
