The Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans is launching a young adult smoking cessation program, called iQuit.
In Greater New Orleans, 90,000 young adults, ages 21-35, smoke cigarettes daily. If they do not quit soon enough, 18,000 are expected to die 10 years earlier than non-smokers. Medical research shows that smokers who quit by age 35 will not die from a smoking-related illness and will eventually have the same quality of health as a non-smoker. In Louisiana, smokers over age 35 have $240,000,000 for smoking cessation programs. Meanwhile, young adult smokers have zero dollars for in-person smoking cessation programs.
