Our Purpose:

To reduce suicides and suicidal behaviors in Jefferson Parish by:

  • Coordinating resources and activities that are already in place to better serve our parish population
  • Promoting awareness of suicide as a public health problem
  • Expanding gatekeeper trainings to educate those who serve youth and at risk populations to recognize suicide warning signs and know how to respond and assist those in crisis
  • Outreach to the community to promote awareness of available resources when someone, or someone they know, is in crisis
  • To assist in the development of high quality peer support programs

In 2007, the Jefferson Youth Suicide Prevention and Education Coalition was formed with the assistance of the Louisiana Suicide Prevention Taskforce, implemented by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Behavioral Health. In 2013, JYSPEC merged with the Jefferson Parish Alliance of Concerned Citizens and expanded its mission to include suicide prevention efforts targeting all ages.
